About this story
The second file was thinner than the first. Constance almost didn’t open it.
It was a hospital discharge record, dated eighteen months after Rose’s disappearance — for a newborn boy, admitted under emergency circumstances, released into the custody of Constance and her new husband within a week. Far too quickly, the investigator’s note read, for a standard adoption, domestic or otherwise.
Constance had never adopted a child. She had given birth to Julian.
Or so she had always believed.
The same investigator — hired years earlier, then paid to go quiet when his findings became too painful to hold — had traced the record to a fertility clinic scandal that never made headlines: a mishandled implantation, a cover-up funded by a hospital system already drowning in the unrelated cost of Rose’s disappearance, and a young couple told a story about a difficult, private birth that neither of them had ever thought to question, because grief and love make people remarkably willing to accept the story they’re handed.
Julian was not Constance’s biological son. He never had been.
He read the file twice, sitting in his childhood bedroom, and understood for the first time why his mother had never let a stranger get close enough to ask real questions about their family. She hadn’t been protecting her wealth.
She’d been protecting a story that was never true to begin with.
And buried in the very last line of the file — the line neither Constance nor Julian had reached yet — was the name of the woman who’d arranged his placement. It matched the name of the nurse who’d walked out of the maternity ward with Rose twenty-five years earlier. The same woman who had just walked out of the back of the chapel.
