Chapter 7 – What Was Left to Sign

The divorce settlement that eventually emerged from that morning looked nothing like the one Ryan had pushed across the table an hour earlier.

The board’s internal investigation, launched within the week, found the equity transfer improperly executed and voided it entirely — Ashley never actually held the stake she’d believed was hers, a fact that came out in a separate legal mess entirely her own to untangle. The six-figure transfer became the subject of a shareholder inquiry that cost Ryan both his seat on the board and, eventually, operational control of the company his father had built, handed instead to a management team the remaining shareholders trusted considerably more than they now trusted him.

My divorce settlement, negotiated from a position I hadn’t had an hour earlier, included the house, full custody of Noah with generous but supervised visitation pending a court review of Ryan’s conduct, and child support calculated against an income Ryan could no longer quietly minimize now that his own finances were under far more scrutiny than he’d ever expected a maternity leave to invite.

Ashley and Ryan are, as far as I know, still together, raising a child of their own now, in circumstances considerably less golden than the hotel suite in that photograph promised either of them. I don’t wish them harm. I’ve simply stopped being the person whose silence made their version of events possible.

Noah is nine months old now. He has Ryan’s eyes and, as far as I can tell so far, none of his father’s talent for disappearing exactly when he’s needed most.

I kept the black folder. Not out of spite — I’ve never opened it again since that morning. I kept it because it sits on a shelf in my home office as a reminder of the version of myself who sat in a hospital room twelve days after major surgery and decided, quietly, without telling a single person until she was ready, that she was done being underestimated.

She was right to be done with it. And she has been, every day since.
