About this story
The chapel at Whitfield Hall had hosted four generations of family weddings, and Constance intended to make sure everyone remembered that this one was different — that this bride hadn’t earned her place among the white orchids and the old stained glass.
She waited for the officiant’s ceremonial question. It was meant as ritual, not invitation. Constance treated it as both.
“I object.” She rose from the front pew, voice carrying to the back wall without needing to be raised. “Because my son is about to marry a woman who has spent eighteen months circling this family’s money like she’s been waiting for an opening.”
Gasps rippled through the pews. Julian spun toward his mother, his hand still half-extended toward Maya’s. “Mother—”
“No.” Constance was already moving, heels striking marble like a countdown. “I’ve watched this girl learn which fork to use for a year and a half. I won’t spend the next fifty pretending I don’t see a gold-digger in a borrowed dress.”
She reached the altar before anyone could stop her. Maya stood frozen — more stunned than afraid — as Constance’s hand shot forward and seized the neckline of her gown.
“Let’s see what’s really under here,” Constance said. “Let’s see if there’s anything real about you at all.”
The fabric tore at the shoulder seam with a sound that silenced the entire chapel. Julian lunged — “Mother, stop, what are you doing—” — half a second too late.
A thin silver chain snapped loose. Something heavy swung free and struck Maya’s chest, catching the stained-glass light in one unmistakable flash of deep red.
Constance’s hand froze in midair, three inches from Maya’s throat.
Her face — flushed a moment ago with righteous fury — drained to something closer to the color of the altar cloth.
“Where did you get that,” she whispered, and it wasn’t a question anyone in that chapel expected to hear her ask.
