Chapter 5 – The Second First Date
Willow called Elias exactly eight days after his confession, proposing what she described as “a second first date, this time with both of us being honest about who’s actually showing up.”
Elias arrived this time without the careful, deliberate vagueness that had defined their earliest conversations, fully himself for the first time in their relationship, uncertain how the shift might change the easy rhythm they’d built over two months of concealed identity.
“I’m still deciding how I feel about the deception,” Willow admitted, over dinner considerably more upscale than their first date, a small acknowledgment of the truth now openly between them. “But I’ve decided I like the actual person underneath it. Turns out those happen to be the same guy, mostly.”
“I wasn’t trying to find someone who’d love the money,” Elias said. “I think I was trying to find out if anyone still could, separate from it. I’m sorry it took two months of dishonesty to get there.”
“I understand why you needed to,” Willow said. “I don’t love it. But I understand it, given what your marriage apparently taught you to expect from people.”
They built, over the following year, a relationship considerably more honest than its unusual beginning had suggested was possible, Elias slowly relearning, through Willow’s steady, unimpressed-by-wealth presence, that genuine connection had never actually required the elaborate concealment he’d assumed it did — just, eventually, the courage to be fully himself, and the good fortune to find someone who genuinely preferred that version anyway.
