Chapter 6 – The Choice Ivy Made

Her Best Friend Stole Her Startup and Fired Her From the Company She Founded — One Contract Ended It All Before the Board 6 of 7

Ivy took three months of leave to consider her options, during which the board, increasingly uneasy about Sophia’s judgment, quietly began preparing a broader leadership transition regardless of what Ivy ultimately decided.

When she returned, it was not to reclaim her old role exactly, but to negotiate a new position entirely — Chief Technology Officer with expanded authority, a renegotiated equity stake that finally reflected her actual contribution to the company, and a board seat secured this time through proper legal documentation rather than an informal favor from a friend’s lawyer.

Sophia remained as CEO, though in a diminished capacity, operating now under board oversight that hadn’t existed before the entire episode exposed how much unchecked authority she’d been allowed to accumulate.

The friendship between them never fully recovered, the easy trust of graduate school replaced by something more careful, more professional, more permanently guarded on Ivy’s part.

“I don’t regret building this company with you,” Ivy told Sophia once, months later, the two of them working through a product roadmap with the stiff cordiality that had become their new normal. “I regret trusting a friendship to do the job a contract should have done. I won’t make that mistake again, with you or anyone else.”

Sophia nodded, understanding, finally, the full cost of what she’d tried to take.
