Chapter 5 – What the Locket Proved

The folder, retrieved from the Ashcroft family archive two days later, contained exactly what Richard had begun to fear and Vivian had spent an entire dinner arguing couldn’t possibly exist: a settlement agreement, dated the year he turned twenty-five, paying Grace Calloway forty thousand dollars in exchange for relocating out of state and severing all contact with Richard Ashcroft and his family, permanently and without exception.

Grace had signed it. Twenty-three years old, unmarried, with a baby girl not yet six months old, facing down a family with more lawyers than Grace had ever met in her life — she had signed it, and disappeared exactly as instructed, and never once, in the eleven years she had left to live, told her daughter the whole truth about why.

“She kept one thing,” Lily said quietly, once the folder had been laid out on the table in front of her and Richard, once the shock in the room had settled into something heavier and more permanent. She reached inside her collar and drew out a small gold locket, worn thin at the clasp from twenty-six years of handling. “She told me never to sell it. I never understood why until tonight.”

Inside, a curl of dark hair and a date — the same date, Richard realized with his hands beginning to shake, as the day he had planned, and never gotten the chance, to propose.

A DNA test three weeks later would only confirm what everyone in that ballroom had already understood the moment Lily turned the photograph over.

Richard Ashcroft had a daughter. He had had one for twenty-six years, and his own mother had paid to make sure he never knew.
