Chapter 5 – The Pattern That Came Out
The formal review, once underway, revealed a pattern considerably more extensive than Diana’s salon comments alone had suggested — multiple documented complaints from junior marketing associates, product demonstrators, and administrative staff, all describing a consistent dynamic of casual dismissiveness toward anyone Diana perceived as occupying a lower professional tier than her own regional marketing role.
“This isn’t just about how you treated me at a nail salon,” Audrey told her, once the full review concluded. “It’s about a documented pattern of treating colleagues with the exact same condescension, over a period of several years, that finally happened to intersect with someone positioned to actually do something about it.”
Diana, faced with the accumulated weight of the evidence, offered little meaningful defense, the specific irony of her own comments about “real ambition” and “actual futures” clearly weighing on her as heavily as the formal review itself.
“I don’t know what to say,” she admitted finally. “I genuinely didn’t think of it as anything more than ordinary workplace banter. I understand now that it wasn’t just banter, for the people actually receiving it.”
“I’d like you to genuinely understand that,” Audrey said. “Not just because it happened to affect me personally through an unusual coincidence, but because it’s been affecting your actual colleagues for years, in ways that clearly never registered as significant to you until this exact moment.”
The company’s HR department, working alongside Audrey’s review, implemented a formal corrective action plan for Diana, including mandatory training and a probationary period, along with broader department-wide training addressing the pattern of dismissiveness the review had uncovered.
