Chapter 6 – What Audrey Learned From the Year

Audrey’s year at Polished, despite its uncomfortable final chapter, ultimately shaped her leadership at Winslow Beauty considerably more than she’d anticipated when she first, somewhat impulsively, decided to spend a year working anonymously alongside the company’s actual customer base.

“I understand now, in a way I don’t think I fully did before, exactly what it feels like to be dismissed for doing work that people assume doesn’t require real skill or ambition,” she told the company’s full leadership team, during a presentation reviewing broader cultural initiatives inspired by her year away from the executive suite. “That understanding needs to inform how we treat every single person in this company, regardless of their title.”

She implemented a new mentorship program connecting Winslow Beauty’s corporate staff directly with the salon technicians, product demonstrators, and retail associates who actually used and sold the company’s products daily, ensuring the kind of disconnect she’d noticed during her own anonymous year became considerably harder for the company’s broader culture to sustain.

The salon itself, once Audrey’s true identity became known there as well, initially treated her with a startled, uncertain formality that took several months to settle back into something resembling the easy, ordinary rapport she’d built during her anonymous year.

“You could have told us,” the salon’s owner said once, still slightly bewildered by the revelation. “We’d have understood. Might have even been an honor, having you here.”

“I think I needed you not to know,” Audrey said. “That was rather the whole point. I got a considerably more honest picture of this company’s actual culture by being just another technician than I ever would have gotten walking in as the chairwoman from the start.”
