Chapter 7 – The Settlement

Winslow Agricultural Holdings settled the class-action lawsuit eight months after Grace’s deposition of Charles, agreeing to a substantial payment to the injured workers along with a court-mandated safety overhaul across all three processing facilities, monitored by independent inspectors for the following five years.

The settlement was, by any measure, a significant victory for the workers Grace had represented — several of whom had spent years believing, correctly as it turned out, that the company’s internal safety reviews had been quietly buried rather than genuinely acted upon.

“Thank you,” one of the plaintiffs, a forklift operator who’d lost partial use of his hand in a preventable accident three years earlier, told Grace after the settlement was finalized. “I didn’t think anyone would actually take this seriously, given how much money that family has.”

“You deserved to be taken seriously,” Grace said. “That was never actually in question, whatever the company wanted you to believe.”

Charles Winslow, in the aftermath of the settlement, stepped back from day-to-day leadership of the company, the reputational damage and mandated safety oversight proving more than he was willing to continue managing personally at seventy-three years old.

Margaret, for her part, never fully reconciled with Grace, though the estrangement settled, over time, into something quieter than the outright hostility of the lawsuit’s most active months.
