Chapter 3 – The Meeting in Marfa
Willow drove out to Marfa herself, three weeks after their initial contact, rather than insisting Jack travel to the Kane Aerospace headquarters, a small gesture of respect that Jack, wary of being treated as a novelty rather than a genuine engineer, appreciated more than she probably realized.
She found him exactly where his forum activity had suggested — beneath a pickup truck in his uncle’s garage, grease-stained and entirely unassuming, a stark contrast to the sophisticated technical insight that had impressed her entire propulsion team for months.
“You’re TXWrench87,” she said, more statement than question, watching him slide out from beneath the truck with evident surprise at finding a stranger in aerospace-branded work clothes standing in his uncle’s garage.
“Depends who’s asking,” Jack said carefully, wiping his hands on a rag, his guardedness immediate and understandable given how thoroughly he’d worked to keep his engineering work separate from the rest of his life.
“Willow Sinclair. Lead propulsion engineer at Kane Aerospace,” she said, extending a hand he shook cautiously. “Your fuel injection timing proposal solved a problem my entire team has been stuck on for over a year. I drove three hours to actually meet the person behind it, and to ask you a fairly significant question about your future.”
Jack, unaccustomed to anyone treating his independent engineering work as anything more than an eccentric hobby, found himself, despite considerable wariness, genuinely curious about what exactly Willow had in mind.
