Chapter 8 – Building Something Real
Their relationship developed carefully over the following year, both of them navigating the genuine complications of a workplace romance with the same careful, deliberate thoughtfulness Jack brought to his engineering work and Willow brought to her technical leadership.
Jack’s professional standing at Kane Aerospace grew steadily alongside the relationship, his combination of formal engineering knowledge and years of practical mechanical experience proving increasingly valuable across multiple projects beyond the original propulsion problem that had first brought him to Willow’s attention.
His family’s relationship with his career choices shifted considerably as well, his mother eventually visiting the Kane Aerospace facility for a family day event, watching her son explain complex propulsion concepts to visiting schoolchildren with an ease and confidence she’d never quite witnessed during his years at the garage.
“I owe you an apology,” she told him, during that visit, genuine regret evident in her voice. “I spent years calling your choices a waste, without ever actually understanding what you were building in that workshop behind your uncle’s garage. I should have asked more questions, instead of assuming I already knew the answer.”
“You know now,” Jack said, offering the acknowledgment without excessive resentment, understanding, finally, that his family’s disappointment had come from genuine concern, however poorly expressed, rather than any real desire to see him fail.
“I know now,” his mother agreed. “I’m sorry it took this long to actually see it clearly.”
