Chapter 9 – The Recognition He Never Expected
Two years after joining Kane Aerospace, Jack’s original fuel injection timing innovation, refined and formally developed alongside Willow’s team, earned the company a significant new government contract, a technical achievement that brought Jack a level of industry recognition he’d never anticipated when he’d first, cautiously, posted his ideas to an anonymous engineering forum.
He was invited to present the research at a national aerospace engineering conference, a professional milestone that felt, to him, considerably more significant given how thoroughly his own family had once dismissed the possibility of exactly this kind of achievement.
Willow attended the presentation alongside him, not as his supervisor by then, but as his partner in every sense the relationship had grown into over two years of careful, deliberate building.
“From an anonymous forum post to a national conference stage,” she said, watching him field questions from an audience of aerospace professionals who had no idea about the auto garage where much of the underlying research had actually originated. “That’s a pretty remarkable two years, by any measure.”
“Wouldn’t have happened without someone actually taking the anonymous forum post seriously in the first place,” Jack said, squeezing her hand briefly before returning to the podium for the next round of technical questions.
His uncle, watching a recording of the presentation later that week, felt a particular, quiet pride in exactly the outcome he’d always privately suspected the workshop hours might eventually produce, whatever the rest of the family had assumed instead.
