He targeted the same automotive supply niche, but with a design improvement he’d been developing quietly for years, one Victor had repeatedly dismissed as too expensive to pursue at scale — a manufacturing process that reduced tolerances significantly while cutting production costs, exactly the kind of innovation an aging, complacent Calloway-Vance had grown too comfortable to bother chasing.

Word moved quickly through an industry that, despite its size, ran largely on relationships built over decades. Marcus’s old contacts — plant managers, procurement directors, engineers who’d worked under him for years before the restructuring — began quietly steering contracts his way, not out of charity, but because his new process genuinely outperformed what Calloway-Vance was still shipping.

Within eighteen months, Marcus’s new venture, built on a fraction of the original company’s headcount, had captured nearly a third of the client base Calloway-Vance had once considered permanently secured.

Victor, watching his own company’s numbers deteriorate against a rival led by the man he’d pushed out through a paperwork maneuver, made the mistake of assuming Marcus’s early success was a fluke that would fade once the novelty wore off.
