Chapter 2 – The Family That Moved Fast

Grant and Miles moved with a speed that stunned Rosalind, informing her within two weeks of their father’s funeral that the ranch would be listed for sale, and that she would need to vacate the property within sixty days.

“We appreciate everything you did for Dad,” Grant said, in a tone that made the appreciation sound considerably more transactional than genuine. “But legally, this is our inheritance, and we’ve decided it makes the most sense to sell rather than maintain a working ranch neither of us has the time or interest to run.”

“I lived here for thirty years,” Rosalind said, the shock of the timeline still settling over her, grief for Walter tangled inseparably with the sudden, urgent fear of losing the only home she’d known for half her adult life. “This is my home, whatever the legal paperwork says.”

“We understand that’s difficult,” Miles said, with the same careful, distant politeness his brother had shown. “But we do have to think about the estate practically. Sixty days should give you plenty of time to make other arrangements.”

Rosalind, still deep in grief and now facing eviction from a home she’d built her entire adult life around, contacted a local attorney within the week, uncertain whether Texas law offered her any meaningful protection given the absence of a marriage certificate or formal will.

What the attorney found, digging carefully through decades of county property records, would ultimately change the entire trajectory of the inheritance dispute.
