Chapter 4 – The Confrontation

Grant and Miles’s reaction to the news, delivered through a formal letter from Mr. Kane’s office, was considerably less gracious than Rosalind had hoped for, though not entirely surprising given the tone of their earlier eviction notice.

“This has to be some kind of clerical error,” Grant said, when Rosalind agreed to a meeting to discuss the deed directly, his composure noticeably strained by a discovery that undercut the sale proceeds he and his brother had already begun mentally allocating. “Dad wouldn’t have just given away part of the ranch without telling either of us.”

“He didn’t give it away,” Rosalind said evenly. “He shared it, with the woman he built thirty years of his life alongside. I understand this complicates your plans, and I’m genuinely sorry for that. I’m not sorry that Walter thought to protect me, even if it took a legal document neither of us discussed openly to actually do it.”

Miles, quieter than his brother but equally frustrated, raised the objection Rosalind had anticipated from the start. “You were never married. You have no legal standing as a spouse. This deed thing feels like a technicality being used to claim something that was never really yours.”

“I have thirty years of shared life,” Rosalind said. “And now, apparently, a legally recorded deed confirming your father wanted at least some part of what we built together to remain mine, regardless of what happened to him. That’s not a technicality. That’s exactly what he intended.”

The brothers, faced with a legally sound claim their own attorney confirmed was fully enforceable, reluctantly agreed to allow Rosalind to retain the twelve-acre parcel, though the broader relationship between them remained, for the foreseeable future, considerably strained.
