Chapter 4 – What Charles Had Been Doing Quietly

What Theo didn’t learn until after his father’s death, four months later, was that Charles had spent the preceding two years quietly, deliberately, working to correct a different kind of imbalance than the emotional distance he’d finally addressed directly.

The will, read in a Sterling Capital conference room that felt, to Theo, deeply unfamiliar despite the family name attached to it, revealed a provision neither Theo nor Audrey had anticipated.

“To my son Theo,” the attorney read, “I leave twenty percent of my personal shares in Sterling Capital, in recognition of a life built on genuine impact rather than inherited expectation — a lesson it took me far too long to fully understand and appreciate.”

Audrey, who had assumed the bulk of the company shares would come to her alone, given her decade of direct involvement in the firm, absorbed the news with visible surprise, though notably without the resentment Theo half-expected.

“He talked to me about this, actually,” Audrey admitted afterward, walking with Theo out of the conference room. “About a year ago. He said he’d spent your whole career treating your choice like a rejection of the family, when it was really just you being exactly the kind of person he should have been proud of from the start. He wanted to fix that, in whatever way he still could.”

“I didn’t need the shares,” Theo said, still processing the weight of the gesture. “I just needed what he actually said to me, at the end.”
