Chapter 6 – The Ceremony He Almost Skipped

Three years after his father’s death, Theo was honored at a district-wide ceremony recognizing exceptional educators, an award he’d been nominated for by colleagues who had no idea about the foundation quietly funding much of the district’s recent classroom improvements.

He nearly skipped the ceremony entirely, uncomfortable with public recognition for work he’d always considered its own reward, before his wife convinced him the students deserved to see their teacher acknowledged publicly, whatever his own discomfort with the spotlight.

Audrey attended, seated in the audience alongside Theo’s wife and children, watching her brother accept an award for exactly the career their father had once dismissed as a disappointment.

“Dad would have been proud,” she told Theo afterward, the two of them standing outside the ceremony hall in a rare, genuinely warm moment between siblings who had spent most of their adult lives on very different paths. “I know it took him too long to say so directly. I think he’d have found a way to say it here, if he could.”

“I think he did, actually,” Theo said, thinking of the will, the shares, the quiet correction his father had made in the final months of a life spent, for too long, measuring his son by the wrong standard entirely.

“Better late than never, I suppose,” Audrey said, and Theo, after a decade of estrangement finally resolved into something like peace, found he genuinely agreed.
