Chapter 8 – What Working Together Revealed

By the seventh month of the required joint operation, Colin and Audrey had settled into a working rhythm that neither would have predicted at the will’s initial reading — Colin handling day-to-day operations and logistics, Audrey managing the ranch’s finances and long-term strategic planning, the two of them meeting weekly to coordinate decisions in a manner that increasingly resembled genuine partnership rather than obligated cooperation.

“I think I understand now why he did this,” Colin told Audrey, during one of their weekly meetings, reviewing the ranch’s genuinely improved financial position compared to the same period the previous year. “I was so angry about the condition, at first. I thought it was Dad punishing us for arguing. I don’t think that’s actually what it was.”

“What do you think it was,” Audrey asked, genuinely curious rather than defensive for the first time in what felt like years.

“I think he knew we’d never actually try, if he just split it and let us go our separate ways,” Colin said. “We’d have sold our own halves eventually, resented each other from a distance, and never found out we could actually work well together. He forced the trying. That’s all this was.”

Audrey considered that assessment carefully, recognizing in it an honesty about their father’s intentions that felt, finally, accurate rather than merely convenient. “He always did believe people needed to be pushed into things they wouldn’t choose on their own.”

“Worked on us, apparently,” Colin said, and Audrey, for the first time in over a year, laughed genuinely at something her brother said.
