Chapter 2 – What Grant Didn’t Know

Over the following months, Josephine found herself drawn increasingly into Grant’s orbit — not through any deliberate effort on her part, but through the natural proximity of a company small enough that its president regularly walked the floor, checking in with employees at every level rather than remaining sealed away in an executive suite.

Grant spoke often, during these casual check-ins, about the investment that had saved the company, always with a genuine, unresolved curiosity about the mysterious partner who had structured the deal. “I’ve tried tracking down who’s actually behind the fund,” he admitted once, during a rare quiet moment at the end of a shift. “Whoever they are, they saved two hundred jobs and never once asked for credit. I’d like to actually thank them properly, someday.”

Josephine, hearing her own carefully anonymous work described with such genuine gratitude, felt a complicated mixture of pride and discomfort at the ongoing deception, a tension that only grew as her feelings for Grant himself deepened beyond simple professional respect.

“Maybe they preferred it that way,” she offered carefully. “Some investors just want to see the company survive, without needing recognition attached to it.”

“Maybe,” Grant said. “I still think about it, though. Whoever made that call believed in this place more than most people would have, given how bad things looked at the time.”

Josephine, listening to Grant’s genuine, unknowing gratitude toward a version of herself he’d never met, found the accumulating weight of the secret growing steadily harder to carry the more their relationship, unplanned and unhurried, continued to deepen.
