Chapter 5 – What She Explained

“I need you to understand why I structured it anonymously in the first place,” Josephine said, once the initial sharpness of Grant’s anger had settled enough for actual conversation. “I’ve spent my entire career watching companies I’ve invested in change how they operate the moment they know who’s actually funding them — performing for the investor instead of just running the business honestly. I wanted Bennett Steel to succeed on its own genuine merits, not because leadership was managing around my presence.”

“And the job,” Grant said, still working through the layers of the deception. “Why actually come work here, instead of just monitoring the investment from a distance the way any normal investor would?”

“I wanted to understand what actually mattered here,” Josephine admitted. “Not the numbers on a balance sheet, but the actual people, the actual work. I didn’t expect to meet you in the process. I definitely didn’t expect to fall for you. That part wasn’t calculated at all. That part just happened, and I kept not telling you because I was afraid of exactly this moment.”

Grant sat with the explanation for a long time, working through his genuine hurt at the deception alongside a growing understanding of the motivations behind it — motivations that, once he examined them honestly, felt considerably more sympathetic than a simple, careless lie would have.

“I need some time,” he said finally. “Not forever. Just enough to actually process what the last eighteen months have really been, now that I understand the full context.”

Josephine nodded, accepting the boundary, the uncertainty of the following weeks weighing on her considerably more than any boardroom negotiation ever had.
