Chapter 3 – The Relationship That Grew Anyway

She Did the Books for a Failing Factory in Ohio By Day. She Was Also the Investor Who Had Already Saved It From Bankruptcy 3 of 7

What began as casual, friendly check-ins gradually became something else entirely — dinners after work, long conversations about the company’s future, an easy compatibility that surprised both of them given how differently their professional lives had unfolded before Josephine’s arrival at Bennett Steel.

“I don’t usually do this,” Grant admitted, during their third dinner together, considerably less guarded than the composed company president Josephine encountered on the factory floor. “Date someone from the company, I mean. Feels complicated, given the power dynamic.”

“I don’t think the power dynamic is quite what you’re imagining,” Josephine said, the observation landing with a private irony Grant had no way of recognizing yet.

Their relationship deepened over the following months, built on a genuine, easy connection that had nothing to do with Josephine’s actual financial position and everything to do with the person she was on the factory floor, at their increasingly frequent dinners, in the quiet, unguarded conversations that filled the gaps between them.

The secret, however, remained a persistent, uncomfortable presence, growing heavier with every month that passed without Josephine finding the right moment, or the courage, to reveal the full truth about her connection to the investment that had saved Grant’s company.

She knew, with increasing certainty, that the longer she waited, the more the eventual revelation would feel like exactly the kind of deception it technically, uncomfortably, actually was.
