Grant spent three weeks working through his own complicated reaction, reviewing, with a clearer head, exactly what Josephine’s presence had actually meant to Bennett Steel over the preceding eighteen months — not just the original rescue investment, but the genuine, careful attention she’d brought to the company’s finances, the real relationships she’d built with employees across every level of the operation, the authentic person he’d fallen for regardless of the secret she’d carried alongside it.

“I’ve been thinking about it from every angle,” he told her, when he finally called to arrange a conversation. “The deception still bothers me. I won’t pretend it doesn’t. But I also can’t find a single thing about the last eighteen months that felt fake, once I actually examine it honestly. You showed up, every single day, as exactly who you actually were with me. The only part you kept hidden was the money behind it.”

“That’s still a significant thing to hide,” Josephine said, unwilling to minimize the legitimate weight of what she’d concealed.

“It is,” Grant agreed. “I’d like to try again anyway, with everything actually on the table this time. I think what we built was real. I’d like to find out if it can survive being fully honest, now that it has the chance to be.”

Josephine, relief and cautious hope tangled together, agreed, the two of them committing to rebuild the relationship on a foundation considerably more transparent than the one it had accidentally, imperfectly, started on.
